Not everything festive has to live on the tree.
Three royal blue glass spheres, printed in gold with a forest of trees, reindeer and stars, lit from within by warm white LEDs. In daylight they read as ornaments. After dark the gold pattern separates from the glass and the whole thing turns into something closer to a lantern.
They come in three sizes, 10cm, 12cm and 15cm, which is the detail that makes them work. Grouped together at staggered heights they look arranged rather than placed. Each has a hidden battery compartment taking 3 x AA, so there is no cord to disguise and no powerpoint to be near.
Put them on a hall table, a mantel, a sideboard, or down the centre of the dining table on Christmas Day. This is the glow people notice when they walk in, before they have even looked at the tree.
